Rabea & Ido: A 3-Day Creative Journey into the Heart of Yamanaka Onsen
~From Germany and Israel to Yamanaka — A Place Where Craft and Inspiration Meet~

Two artists who made Yamanaka Onsen their creative home invite you on a journey into the land, its quiet traditions, and the crafts rooted in them.
Guests will be among the first to visit their new studios, opening in spring 2025.
Stay at a 120-year-old ryokan and see Japanese craftsmanship through their eyes.

Guiding this intimate three-day experience are two remarkable artists: lacquerware artist Rabea Ferber from Germany and ceramic artist Ido Ferber from Israel.
Both chose to settle in the peaceful hot spring town of Yamanaka Onsen, drawn by its natural beauty, cultural depth, and deep-rooted traditions in craft.
Through this journey, you’ll explore why Japan—and Yamanaka in particular—has become their creative home.
You’ll stay at Hanamurasaki, a ryokan with over 120 years of history, and take part in immersive, hands-on experiences including studio visits, workshops, and conversations with local artists.
Evenings will be spent sharing meals with the artists, discovering the stories behind their work, and reflecting on the future of craftsmanship in Japan.
This is not just a tour—it’s a thoughtful exploration of place, process, and presence.

Tour Hosts:

Rabea Ferber (Germany → Tokyo, 2020 → Yamanaka Onsen, 2022)
Originally trained in Product Design, Rabea was captivated by the process of making by hand.
When she arrived in Japan in 2020, she first heard about the wonders of urushi lacquer.
After spending two years studying traditional Japanese end-grain turning and urushi lacquering at the Ishikawa Prefectural Institute of Yamanaka Lacquerware, Rabea set up her own workshop
in Yamanaka Onsen.
She enjoys working with hand tools, leaving traces of chisels and knives, and adding her own narrative to the story told by the wood.

Ido Ferber (Israel → Tokyo, 2020 → Yamanaka Onsen, 2024)
Born in a small town between Jerusalem and Tel Aviv, Ido spent most of his youth barefoot and immersed in nature.
His artistic inspiration stems from the vivid present—the colors, textures, and organic transformations of the natural world.
He creates functional ceramic pieces for daily use and quiet enjoyment.
