■ About Houshi – The Oldest Ryokan in the Hokuriku Region
The history of Houshi began alongside that of Mt. Hakusan, one of Japan's three most sacred mountains, which celebrated its founding over 1,300 years ago.
The story begins when Hakusan Daigongen, a mountain deity, appeared in a dream to Taicho Daishi—a great Buddhist monk undergoing rigorous training on Mt. Hakusan—and revealed the existence of a hidden sacred spring deep underground.

Following this divine message, Taicho Daishi journeyed to this land of Awazu and successfully unearthed the sacred spring. He then instructed his close disciple, Garyo Houshi, who had long served by his side, to build a hot spring inn at the site and entrusted him with its care. This was the origin of what is now known as "Houshi."
After Garyo Houshi’s passing, his adopted son, Zengoro, succeeded him as the second-generation caretaker. Since then, the inn has been operated solely by Houshi’s descendants, continuing for 47 generations—a rare tradition even on a global scale. To this day, the family faithfully preserves and protects the sacred spring.

■ Houshi Garden registered as a National Monument (Place of Scenic Beauty)  — Second in Ishikawa Prefecture
It is said that the garden was originally created during the Edo period. Over the generations, it has evolved with the changing times, reflecting both the gardening trends of each era and the heartfelt vision of each successive Zengoro.

Its ability to capture transitions across historical periods within a single landscape has been highly regarded and was a key reason for its official registration.
Today, the garden beautifully integrates traditional and modern elements—for example, the large Yukimi (snow-viewing) lanterns popular during the Taisho and Showa eras, and riverbanks reinforced with faux wood. We warmly invite you to take a stroll through Houshi Garden and experience the rich history woven into its paths.

■ Houshi’s Hospitality – Examples of Guest Services
-Evening illumination of the garden associated with Enshu Kobori, creating a beautiful view even after sunset.
-Seasonal refreshments are available in the lounge overlooking the garden (from 3:00 PM to 10:00 PM).
-A fun stamp rally for children inside the ryokan. A small gift awaits those who complete it.
-“Shakyo” (Buddhist sutra copying) kits are provided for a calming and meditative experience.
-Towel rental is available for enjoying the footbath “Meditation Hot Spring” at Awazu Onsen.
