Sitting halfway up Mt. Senkoji in the beautiful port city of Onomichi, LOG is both a boutique hotel and an architectural space where guests can feel connected to their surroundings. Although LOG is Studio Mumbai’s first construction project outside India, the work adheres to Bijoy Jain’s design principals. In addition, Bijoy Jain drew inspirations from the novelist Naoya Shiga’s house nearby to design LOG's guest rooms including the sound of ship horns, the rays of sunlight pouring through and the ‘shoji’ doors that frames the view of Onomichi.
During construction, natural materials, traditional skilled craftsmen were used alongside more conventional building methods. For the interior design, artists and craftsmen from India and Japan handcrafted everything from the chairs, to lights, to the washi paper covering the tables. From the pastel-colored stucco walls made from earth dug from the hillside to the guestrooms screened in Japanese washi paper, LOG embraces you in its ambience the moment you step through the front gates. It is truly unlike any other location in Hiroshima Prefecture.
Together with the Japanese ‘washi’ paper craftsman, Wataru Hatano, the building itself celebrates the quality of materials used in the space from floor to ceiling.Feel the breeze and sunlight coming through the windows in a room designed to experience a space being wrapped inside a cocoon.
The celebrated food artist Ai Hosokawa develops all the restaurant’s seasonal menus. For the past 15 years, her nourishing dishes and clean flavors have created waves in the Japanese culinary world. The freshest local ingredients go into every item on the menu.
【About the building and access】
LOG is a refurbished three-story apartment located on the mountainside in Onomichi. Please note that as our hotel is located on a hill, there are about 100 steps of stone stairs to climb from the bottom of the hill to reach our building. As for access, there is no way to reach our accommodation without climbing up the steps. For those coming by car, we ask you to use a public parking lot nearby at the bottom of the stairs.
【The Guestrooms】
“Be gentle.” This was the mantra Jain instilled in the team from the beginning of the project. Nowhere is this better illustrated than in the design of the six guestrooms on the third floor. Every room is decorated from floor to ceiling in traditional washi paper. Combined with the muted hues in the room and the soft light from the window, the guestroom is both a space for relaxation and for meditation. The layout of the room mirrors a Japanese nagaya building, popular during the Edo period (1603-1868). The space between the shoji screens and the window evokes a traditional Japanese engawa veranda.

【Library】
The design for the library is inspired by Bijoy Jain’s own personal study in Mumbai. The color was chosen by British color artist Muirne Kate Dineen who worked closely with Jain and the rest of the project team to create LOG’s distinctive color scheme. For the library, Kate chose a specific shade of green that blends with the trees growing around LOG. Access to the library is reserved for guests.
【Gallery】
The gallery charts LOG’s journey from a conventional apartment building to the what we see today. Preliminary sketches, scale models and examples of experimentation with paints and surfaces give insight into Studio Mumbai’s work methods and their continuous process of experimentation and re-evaluation.
【The Shop & Reception】
As well as catering to the everyday needs of guests, LOG’s reception of house staff can advise on places of interest in Onomichi and the surrounding area. In the shop, guests can purchase items produced by artists and craftsmen who helped create LOG.
【Garden】
The garden is integral to LOG. A key design concept is connecting interior and exterior spaces. Both the garden and the building will continue to evolve with each passing season.
