Today, the area is popular with families for its Umekoji Park, Kyoto Aquarium, and Kyoto Railway Museum, but it has a rich history dating back to the mid-Kamakura period, when Kaikoji Temple was founded. It was destroyed during the Onin War and later relocated several times before becoming a sub-temple of Sennyu-ji Temple.
