In the Edo period (1603-1867), the Satsuma Clan had a system of "tosho" (outer citadels) around the Kagoshima Castle, the main castle, to house their warriors in preparation for attacks from outside enemies. This was the Satsuma clan's unique system called "tojo system," and there are still many samurai residences called "fumoto," which are the centers of the tojo, throughout Kagoshima Prefecture.
The Izumi Foothill, located on the border with the Higo clan, was one of the most important bases for the clan's defense, so an outer castle (= foothill) was built with detailed planning during the Edo period, and a powerful group of warriors was stationed there. The foothills, one of the largest groups of samurai residences in the Satsuma Domain, were selected as a national Important Preservation District for Groups of Traditional Buildings, and still retain the history of the Satsuma warriors and the beautiful landscape that has been preserved since that time.
