Japanese-Style Room, 12 Tatami — “Kiku”

A ground-floor room that looks out onto a tended garden of clipped shrubs and a stone lantern. Wicker chairs are set out on the hiroen veranda, where you can sit and watch the garden. It is about 13 steps from the entrance to the room.

Kiku was once one of our 12-tatami rooms. After its fittings were refreshed we began offering it as a room type of its own. The size and capacity are the same as our 12-tatami rooms: about 40 m², for up to six guests. Futon bedding is laid out on the tatami for you while you are at dinner.

EARLY BIRD 30

A wagyu hot pot of your own, and a buffet of about fifty dishes.

A Japanese Black wagyu hot pot and sashimi are brought to your seat, and the rest of the evening is a buffet our Japanese chefs cook through. Afterwards, the hot spring from our own source.

If your travel dates are already set, this is the plan to take: book at least 30 days ahead and the rate is lower.

BUFFET

Dining — a Japanese buffet, cooked as you watch

Dinner is served in our buffet hall, Tsuki-no-kura. Two main dishes come to your seat — a Japanese Black wagyu hot pot, cooked at your table, and sashimi. Everything else is yours to choose from: about fifty dishes of Japanese cooking, with sushi and tempura finished in front of you at the live kitchen. Dinner is a 90-minute sitting.

Breakfast is a buffet as well, Japanese and Western side by side.

※ Children of elementary-school age are served one main dish (the wagyu hot pot) in addition to the buffet. Younger children have the buffet only.

HOT SPRING

The baths — our own source, and the “gold spring”

Gekkoen draws from its own spring on the grounds — a sodium chloride spring, long called the all-purpose bath.

Our large baths are Tsuru-no-yu and Kame-no-yu, and along the Takigawa are the open-air baths Ofuku-no-yu and Tamahoko-no-yu. Cross Gekkobashi, the bridge, and the large baths of our sister inn Korokan are open to you as well.

GUEST ROOMS

Rooms — tatami, in a wooden sukiya building

Yugetsusanso is a wooden sukiya-style building from the early Showa era. Each room has a fumikomi step-down entrance and a hiroen, the wide veranda that runs along the window, and keeps the quiet character of the time it was built.

Rooms run from compact tatami rooms to larger ones for a family, so you can take one sized to your party. Room types include Yuugetsu-tei, closest to the river, and the renovated room Kiku.

This plan can be booked up to 30 days before the night of your stay. Once your dates are set, booking early is what makes it worthwhile.

GOOD TO KNOW

Before you arrive

The building is reached by stairs. It was built in the early Showa era, and there are steps and level changes throughout; guest rooms are on the first, second and third floors. Please allow for this if you are travelling with heavy luggage.

These are tatami rooms: you sleep on futon bedding laid out on the tatami floor rather than in a bed, and it is laid out for you while you are at dinner. Shoes come off at the entrance.

The large baths are communal and are taken without swimwear, separately for men and women. Please wash and rinse at the taps before getting into the bath.

Check-out is at 10:00. The baths are open in the morning, so there is time for one more before you go.
