[Names of "Kaju," Their Meanings and Origins]

・Kanreki (61st Birthday)
The Chinese zodiac cycle takes 60 years, and in the 61st year, one returns to the zodiac sign of the year one was born. Kanreki is a Japanese 61st birthday, and the custom of celebrating by giving red gifts (red for babies or red for warding off evil) symbolizes "being reborn again."

・Koki (70th Birthday)
The name originates from a line in the "Qujiang Poem" by Du Fu, a poet of the Tang Dynasty in China, that reads, "Life is seventy years old, a rare age." The words "rare" and "unusual" refer to a celebration of longevity, as living to the age of 70 has long been considered rare. Celebrations vary by era, region, and household, with no set format.

・Kiju (77th birthday) - 77 years old by the traditional Japanese age reckoning system
When the character for "joy" (happiness) is written in cursive script, it looks like "17" with "7" attached to it, resembling "77," so 77 years old is called "Kiju." The celebration is basically the same as for Kanreki, and the color is purple, like Koki. There is also a custom of writing the character for "joy" on folding fans and distributing them.

・Sanju (80th birthday) - 80 years old by the traditional Japanese age reckoning system
The abbreviated character for "kasa" (umbrella) looks like "hachiju" (eighty) written vertically, so this came to refer to the age of 80. In the past, when someone turned 80, it was customary to distribute taihakumochi (rice cakes made with white sugar) to relatives, friends, and neighbors. The celebration is basically the same as for Kanreki, and the same purple color as Koki and Kiju is used.

・Hanju (half-life): 81 years old by the Japanese age reckoning system
The character for "half" (半) can be broken down to "81," so this term came to refer to the age of 81 or a celebration of that age. The celebration is basically the same as for kanreki, and like for beiju, gold-brown items are used.

・Beiju (88th birthday): 88th year by the Japanese age reckoning system
The character for "rice" (米) can be broken down to "88," so this term came to refer to the age of 88. It is also called "rice year," "rice character celebration," or "rice celebration." The celebration is basically the same as for kanreki, but red or gold-brown items are used.

・Hakuju (white birthday): 99 years old by the Japanese age reckoning system
If you remove the "ichi" (one) from the character for "hyaku" (百), it becomes the character for "haku," so this term came to refer to the age of 99. The celebration is basically the same as for kanreki, but the gift is red or white.

・Joju (high lifespan): 100 years old by the traditional Japanese age reckoning system
This refers to a long human lifespan. Longevity is divided into three levels: upper, middle, and lower. Joju refers to the highest level of 100 years old, or 120 years old. Incidentally, geju refers to the celebration of 60 years old (or 80 years old), and chuju refers to the celebration of 80 years old (or 100 years old).
